Environmental pollution by mercury (Hg) is of particular interest in Latin American countries like Ecuador, where artisanal and industrial gold mining has widely expanded. However, classic assessments, either based on water parameters or bioindicators, are not always effective in determining the effect of this type of pollutant on the ecological quality of the rivers. This study analyzed the behavioral and biochemical responses in benthic macroinvertebrate Nectopsyche sp. after sub-lethal Hg exposure emulating the maximum limits allowed by the current legislation in Ecuador (0.0002 mg L-1). Behavioral changes were significant, with an average decrease in the movement (measured as the number of strokes per 15 s of larvae) after 6 days of exposure to the maximum limit concentration of Hg. Furthermore, the antioxidant enzyme Glutathione S-Transferase activity significantly increased when exposed for 7 days to 0.0002 mg L-1 of Hg concentration. These results preliminarily proved that behavioral and biochemical patterns could function as biomarkers that efficiently identify ecological impairment caused by Hg, which would otherwise be neglected by a purely chemical-based or biomonitoring based on the presence/absence of macroinvertebrates type of assessment. Moreover, we demonstrate that the current limits allowed can impair aquatic life.

Parasites are important players in ecological communities that can shape community structure and influence ecosystem energy flow. Yet beyond their effects on hosts, parasites can also function as an important prey resource for predators. Predators that consume infectious stages in the environment can benefit from a nutrient-rich prey item while concurrently reducing transmission to downstream hosts, highlighting the broad importance of this interaction. Less clear, however, are the specific characteristics of parasites and predators that increase the likelihood of consumption. Here, we determine what combination(s) of predator and parasite morphological traits lead to high parasite consumption. We exposed the infectious stages (cercariae) of five trematode (fluke) taxa to aquatic insect predators with varying foraging strategies and morphologies. Across the 19 predator-parasite combinations tested, damselfly predators in the family Coenagrionidae were, on average, the most effective predators of cercariae, consuming between 13 and 55% of administered cercariae. Large-bodied cercariae of Ribeiroia ondatrae had the highest average vulnerability to predation, with 37-48% of cercariae consumed. The interaction between predator head width and cercariae tail size strongly influenced the probability of consumption: small-bodied predators were the most effective consumers, particularly for larger tailed parasites. Thus, the likelihood of parasite consumption depended strongly on the relative size between predator and parasite. Our study helps establish that predation on free-living parasites largely follows a broader predator-prey framework. This will help to identify which predator and parasite combinations will likely have high consumptive interactions, potentially reducing parasite transmission in natural populations.

Introducción: La distribución de los macroinvertebrados acuáticos en los ríos puede estar determinada por el tipo del sustrato, la forma del canal del río, el régimen hidrológico y las interacciones con factores bióticos y abióticos. En Costa Rica se desconoce en gran parte de los ríos, las variaciones en la distribución de los macroinvertebrados acuáticos producto de las transiciones y consecuentes variaciones en características fisicoquímicas e hidrológicas. Objetivos : 1) Estudiar el cambio del ensamblaje de macroinvertebrados acuáticos en dos sitios dentro del cauce del Río Naranjo, durante los cuatro periodos hidrológicos del año; 2) determinar la relación entre las variables fisicoquímicas, sustrato y el caudal con el ensamblaje. Metodología: El estudio se realizó en el Río Naranjo, Costa Rica, en dos sitios de muestreo durante un año, evaluando los cuatro periodos hidrológicos del año. En cada sitio de muestreo se obtuvieron valores de velocidad y profundidad del agua, caudal, oxígeno disuelto, pH, conductividad, sulfatos, amonio, nitrato, silicatos, fosfatos y sustrato, y se obtuvo una muestra de macroinvertebrados acuáticos por cada tipo de microhábitat determinado por la velocidad del agua. Se realizó una prueba PERMANOVA de dos vías, para determinar si existe una diferencia entre la abundancia de macroinvertebrados acuáticos, por periodo y entre sitios. Se hizo un análisis de correspondencia canónica para observar la relación entre los macroinvertebrados acuáticos y los factores ambientales. Por último, se realizó una prueba de Spearman para determinar la relación positiva o negativa de las variables con los macroinvertebrados Resultados: Hubo una mayor abundancia durante la estación seca, mientras que durante la transición de la estación seca a la lluviosa se registró la menor abundancia de organismos. El ACC indicó que el primer eje presentó una relación positiva con el sustrato limo y arena, y una relación negativa para las variables velocidad de corriente y sustrato rocoso. El segundo eje presentó una relación positiva con el caudal y los nitratos, y negativa para el sustrato canto rodado. La mayoría de los organismos mostraron una respuesta negativa al aumento del flujo y los nitratos. Discusión: Conforme aumenta el caudal, aumenta la velocidad del agua y no todos los organismos registrados en el Río Naranjo cuentan con características para sobrevivir a estas condiciones. Además, la profundidad también aumenta junto con la fuerza de arrastre, provocando el movimiento de los sustratos de menor tamaño y una remoción de organismos. El aumento de nitratos puede generar una disminución de los organismos más sensibles como Plecoptera y Ephemeroptera. A pesar de las variaciones fisicoquímicas y de caudal registradas en el Río Naranjo, éstas no fueron lo suficientemente fuertes como para variar el ensamblaje de macroinvertebrados acuáticos, por lo que la cuenca por el momento no cuenta con factores estresantes que elimine organismos durante uno o varios meses del año.


Introduction: The distribution of aquatic macroinvertebrates in rivers may be determined by the type of substrate, the shape of the river channel, the hydrological regime, and interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. Variations in the distribution of aquatic macroinvertebrates due to transitions and variations in physicochemical and hydrological characteristics are unknown in most rivers. Objectives: 1) to study the change in the aquatic macroinvertebrates assemblages in two sites in Naranjo River, during the four hydrological seasons; 2) to determine the relationship between the physicochemical variables, substrate and flow with the assemblages. Methodology: The study was conducted in the Naranjo River, Costa Rica, at two sampling sites during one year, evaluating the four seasons of the year. In each station we measure, values of water velocity and depth, flow rate, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, sulfates, ammonium, nitrate, silicates, phosphates, and substrate were obtained, and a sample of aquatic macroinvertebrates was obtained for each type of microhabitat determined by water velocity. Two-way PERMANOVA was made to determine if there is a difference among aquatic macroinvertebrate abundance, per period and between sites. Canonical correspondence analysis was used to observe the relationship between aquatic macroinvertebrates and environmental factors. Finally, a Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was performed to determine the positive or negative relationship of variables with macroinvertebrates. Results: There was a greater abundance during the dry season, while during the transition from dry to the rainy season, the lowest abundance of organisms was recorded. The CCA indicates that the first axis presented a positive relationship with the silt and sand substrate and a negative relationship for the current velocity and rock substrate variables. The second axis showed a positive relationship with flow and nitrates and negative for the pebble substrate. Most organisms showed a negative response to increased flow and nitrates. Discussion: As flow increases, current velocity increases, and not all organisms recorded in the Naranjo River have the characteristics to survive these conditions. In addition, the depth also increases along with the drag force, causing movement of smaller substrates and removal of organisms. Increased nitrates can lead to a decrease in more sensitive organisms, such as Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera. In spite of the physicochemical and flow variations registered in the Naranjo River, these were not strong enough to vary the assemblages of aquatic macroinvertebrates, so the basin does not have stressful factors that eliminate organisms during one or several months of the year.

Riparian reforestation is a common restoration action in urban streams, but relatively little is known about the influence of local riparian vegetation in the face of watershed-scale urban land cover. Allochthonous organic matter and benthic algae are important basal energy resources in streams, but the roles of watershed urbanization vs near-stream vegetation in the availability of these resources are not well understood. Our goal was to understand how the interaction of land cover at 2 spatial scales (watershed vs reach) and seasonal dynamics shape basal resources and their effects on macroinvertebrate communities. We assessed relationships between seasonal patterns in standing stocks of particulate organic matter (POM) and benthic periphyton and macroinvertebrate community composition in openand closed-canopy reaches of 4 urban and 4 reference streams in northern Kentucky, USA. POM standing stocks were not strongly influenced by watershed or riparian condition. Benthic algal biomass was greater in urban than in reference streams in all seasons and in open than in closed riparian canopies in summer when light levels are most affected by a deciduous canopy. Relationships between macroinvertebrate functional feeding group (FFG) biomass and their primary food resources were influenced by watershed land use and season, but riparian canopy effects were minor. The proportion of collectors varied by season, whereas the proportion of shredders was higher in reference than urban streams. Scraper biomass was influenced by benthic algal biomass and varied seasonally, whereas predator biomass was driven by prey-insect biomass. Periphyton density was affected by the interaction of watershedand reach-scale land cover and was the only basal resource strongly related to consumer taxa. Watershed land use influences the stream ecosystem, but local riparian canopy may be important in limiting benthic algal accumulation.

The isolated effects of a single insecticide can be difficult to assess in natural settings because of the presence of numerous pollutants in many watersheds. Imidacloprid use for suppressing hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae (Annand) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae), in forests offers a rare opportunity to assess potential impacts on aquatic macroinvertebrates in relatively pristine landscapes. Aquatic macroinvertebrate communities were assessed in 9 streams in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (southern Appalachian Mountains, USA). The streams flow through hemlock conservation areas where imidacloprid soil drench treatments were applied for hemlock woolly adelgid suppression. Sites were located upstream and downstream of the imidacloprid treatments. Baseline species presence data (pre-imidacloprid treatment) were available from previous sample collections at downstream sites. Downstream and upstream sites did not vary in numerous community measures. Although comparisons of paired upstream and downstream sites showed differences in diversity in 7 streams, higher diversity was found more often in downstream sites. Macroinvertebrate functional feeding groups and life habits were similar between downstream and upstream sites. Downstream and baseline stream samples were similar. While some functional feeding group and life habit species richness categories varied, variations did not indicate poorer quality downstream communities. Imidacloprid treatments applied according to US Environmental Protection Agency federal restrictions did not result in negative effects to aquatic macroinvertebrate communities, which indicates that risks of imidacloprid use in forest settings are low. This study present an inventory of the genera of Odonata-Anisoptera in lotic environments of the Iguatemi River basin, upper Paraná River, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Samplings were performed from December 2006 to February 2009 in the Iguatemi River and eight streams of the basin. We collected 739 immature Odonata, distributed in 25 genera and three families; of which one genus represent a new record for the Mato Grosso do Sul State. Progomphus, Tramea, Elasmotemis, Macrothemis, Aphyla and Phylocycla were the most representative genera in the Iguatemi River basin. The genus accumulation curve predicts an increase of new genera for the Iguatemi River basin.


Este trabalho apresenta um inventário de gêneros de Odonata-Anisoptera em ambientes lóticos da bacia do rio Iguatemi, alto rio Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. As amostragens ocorreram no período de dezembro de 2006 a fevereiro de 2009 no rio Iguatemi e em oito riachos distribuídos na bacia. Foram coletados 739 imaturos de Odonatas, distribuídos em 25 gêneros e três famílias, do qual um gênero representa um novo registro para o Estado de Mato Grosso dos Sul. Progomphus, Tramea, Elasmotemis, Macrothemis, Aphyla e Phylocycla foram os gêneros mais representativos na bacia do rio Iguatemi. A curva de acumulação de gênero sugere a expectativa de incremento de novos gêneros para a bacia do rio Iguatemi.

Invasive species are a major cause of species extinction in freshwater ecosystems, and crayfish species are particularly pervasive. The invasive American signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus has impacts over a range of trophic levels, but particularly on benthic aquatic macroinvertebrates. Our study examined the effect on the macroinvertebrate community of removal trapping of signal crayfish from UK rivers. Crayfish were intensively trapped and removed from two tributaries of the River Thames to test the hypothesis that lowering signal crayfish densities would result in increases in macroinvertebrate numbers and taxon richness. We removed 6181 crayfish over four sessions, resulting in crayfish densities that decreased toward the center of the removal sections. Conversely in control sections (where crayfish were trapped and returned), crayfish density increased toward the center of the section. Macroinvertebrate numbers and taxon richness were inversely correlated with crayfish densities. Multivariate analysis of the abundance of each taxon yielded similar results and indicated that crayfish removals had positive impacts on macroinvertebrate numbers and taxon richness but did not alter the composition of the wider macroinvertebrate community. Synthesis and applications: Our results demonstrate that non-eradication-oriented crayfish removal programmes may lead to increases in the total number of macroinvertebrates living in the benthos. This represents the first evidence that removing signal crayfish from riparian systems, at intensities feasible during control attempts or commercial crayfishing, may be beneficial for a range of sympatric aquatic macroinvertebrates.
